A three days workshop on the hermeneutic inspirations of silk and bamboo-slip texts on the studies of  the history of Chinese philosophical thoughts was held in June 2012. Over twenty scholars from Mainland China, Taiwan, UK and the U.S.A. attended in the event. The workshop was funded by Prof. Liu Xiaogan’s RGC project “Inspirations and Challenges from Silk and Bamboo-slip Texts: Philosophical Investigation Based on Interdisciplinary Reses (Phase I)”. It also received a generous sponsorship from Ms Rosana Wong.

In August 2011, our centre co-organized a conference entitled “Opportunities and Challenges: Silk and Bamboo-slip Texts and Chinese Philosophical Thoughts” with China Renmin University and National Taiwan University. Held in Beijing, the event attracted over twenty scholars from Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, and the U.S.A.

In August 2011, a six-day papers review workshop for the project “Inspirations and Challenges from Silk and Bamboo-slip Texts: Philosophical Investigation Based on Interdisciplinary Reses (Phase I)” (「簡帛文獻與思想史研究計畫」) was organized. Five experts in the fields of Chinese philosophy and Chinese philology specialized in silk and bamboo-silk texts were invited to attend the workshop. The workshop was funded by Prof. Liu Xiaogan’s Res Grant project “Inspirations and Challenges from Silk and Bamboo-slip Texts: Philosophical Investigation Based on Interdisciplinary Reses (Phase I)”.

In June 2011, a one-day symposium entitled “Human Nature: Does It Exist or Not? Is It Good or Evil?” was held. Six scholars presented papers on their respective areas of specialties around the common theme “human nature”. Each paper was then commented by an expert in that area.

In November 2010, a roundtable discussion on “Guoxue (National Scholarship) and Science: On Nationalism and Scientism” was held. Prof. Huang Pumin (Standing Associate Dean, Guoxue Academia, Renmin University of China) and Prof. Gao Ruiquan (Department of Philosophy, East China Normal University) were invited to present papers. Prof. John Makeham (ICS Visiting Professor and Professor, Australia National University) and Prof. Chen Fong Ching (ICS Honorary Senior Res Fellow) served as commentators of the two papers. An in-depth discussion among all the attendants followed the presentation and commentary session.

In November 2010, the Centre co-organized “Hermeneutics East & West: Symposium Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Publication of Gadamer’s Truth and Method(詮釋學東與西──伽達默爾《真理與方法》出版五十週年學術會議) with the Edwin Cheng Foundation Asian Centre for Phenomenology and Archive for Phenomenology and Contemporary Philosophy (both of CUHK). Eighteen scholars from Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong participated.

The workshop was held on 16 – 27 August 2010 and is co-organized by Professors Liu Xiaogan, Cheng Chi-hsiung, and Liang Tao. The discussion is focused on how to raise the academic standard of the analytical study/res of the most representative silk and bamboo-slip texts. Eventually the workshop aims at producing for the academia, particularly for the fields of intellectual history and history of philosophy, more analytical studies/references of higher reliability. The workshop is under the financial support of the Lee Hysan Foundation and the General Res Fund of the HKSAR Government.

Confucianism: Scholarship, Faith, and Self-Cultivation

Twenty papers were presented by scholars from Canada, Hong Kong, Korea, Mainland China, Taiwan and Singapore. Besides, over 20 scholars participated as moderators and commentators.

A one-week workshop on the bamboo-silk texts of the Laozi and issues around the topic was held in June 2008, with the participation of nine specialists in the field from Mainland China, Taiwan and the U.S. The workshop was funded by Prof. Liu Xiaogan’s RGC res project “The Laozi Text: Two Millennia Transformation”.

Taoist Textual Interpretation: Historical Approach versus Self Expression
was held on 19—21 December 2007. It aims at bringing the study of Chinese philosophy to a new height and, in particular, increasing our awareness of the importance of methodology. The conference was co-organized by the Centre for the Studies of Daoist Culture of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and New Asia College.

The two-week workshop invited 6 scholars from the U.S.A., Mainland China and Taiwan to investigate how the text of the Laozi has evolved in the course of history, and to study the related bamboo and silk texts. They are Professors Chen li-kuei, Tao Hongyin, Liang Tao, Bai Xi, Ding Sixin and Zhang Jie.

An international roundtable forum on the methodology of Chinese philosophy studies was held on 15-16 December 2006. Over 20 scholars from Belgium, Canada, Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan and the U.S.A. participated in the discussion.

Over 20 scholars from Hong Kong, Japan, Mainland China and Taiwan participated in the conference.

There was also an exhibition of “The Lotus Sutra — A Message of Peace and Harmonious Coexistence¡¨ co-organized by our Centre, The Institute of Oriental Philosophy, Soka Gakkai International of Hong Kong and St. Petersburg Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian.

Over 40 scholars from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Mainland China, Singapore, and the U.S.A. participated in the conference.

Participants were all specialist in the field from Mainland China, Taiwan, the U.S.A., Canada, Germany, Singapore and Korea. There was also a reading group on Guo Xiang Commentaries.

Right after the establishment of our Center, the conference aimed at bridging Chinese and Western philosophy and was proved a success, attracting 23 scholars from over the world. Feedback on the conference was very positive. Reports on the conference can be found in several major publications on philosophy and culture.
