Biographical
Sketch
A native of Canada,
Chris Fraser grew up partly in the U.S. but has lived in Asia since
1984. He got into philosophy after spending a few years seeking
mystical experience but failing to have any. He considered becoming
a Buddhist monk but concluded that philosophical reflection was
more enlightening. Before earning his Ph.D., he worked as a technical
writer, editor, and translator at electronics companies in Taiwan
for several years. He also taught English composition to graduate
students in science and technology at two national universities
there, a job that led him to publish two English textbooks in Chinese.
He holds a B.A. from
Yale (1984), a master's degree from National Taiwan University (1994),
and a Ph.D. from the University of Hong Kong (1999), where his dissertation
won the Li Ka Shing Prize for outstanding Ph.D. dissertation in
the humanities and social sciences (1997-99). Before joining the
Department of Philosophy at CUHK, he held a postdoctoral fellowship
at the Institute of Chinese Literature and Philosophy, Academia
Sinica, Taipei.
Chris now devotes most
of his professional attention to early Chinese philosophy, especially
epistemology and ethics. When not working, he watches movies, plays
with his cats, dabbles in photography, and works out at the gym.
