Brief Biography:
After graduating from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a BA., Wong Kai Yee did his M.Phil. work with Dr. Lee Tien Ming, who first taught him and roused his interest in analytic philosophy, and obtained a Master¡¦s degree in 1982. He spent several years being a school teacher of Buddhist studies at a beautiful fishing village (Tai O, Lantau) before going back to academic philosophy. He received his Ph.D. from the Australian National University in 1990. After briefly teaching at the Open Learning Institute and University of Hong Kong, he joined the Department of Philosophy as a lecturer in 1993.
He works mainly in analytic philosophy. Courses he has taught include Perspectives in Artificial Intelligence, Logic, Critical Thinking, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Mind, Applied Ethics, Frege and Kripke, David Hume, Consequentialism, and Introduction to Philosophy.
He has published papers on philosophical logic, philosophy of language, teaching philosophy, modal semantics, and applied ethics. He has supervised postgraduate students working on such topics as consequentialism, mental explanation, externalism in epistemology, the metaphysics of Paul Tillich and Vijnanavadin, and personal identity.
Besides philosophy, he likes reading, hiking, and music. Though no longer wishing as he did to become a rock musician, he still practices the guitar when time allows. He owns a broken vintage Stratocaster, an Ovation 1995, and an Ibenez George Benson (also broken). Among his favorite writers and musicians are Stanislaw Lem, Qian Zhongshu, Nabokov, Charlie Parker, and Jimmy Hendrix.
